Who Alec and Andrew
What Andrew gets to deal with Alec who just got really badly dump. DAD STUFFS OH NOES.

Overall, it had been a bad night.

For several months now Alec had been fairly steadily dating this guy, Kevin. He'd gone over to Kevin's place last night so they could go to a movie or something, just generally hang out. When he'd knocked on the door Kevin's mom answered it.

She told him in no uncertain terms that she wasn't allowing Kevin to see Alec any more because Alec was making Kevin sad. Apparently Alec's tendency to flirt with people upset Kevin but instead of bringing it up to Alec, he'd told his mom... and now she was telling him.

Before Alec could even get a word in edgewise, she'd slammed the door in his face.

Alec had not gone out for a drink but instead spent the night wandering about and in the morning did not show up for work even though he'd been consistently being punctual for the past three weeks. (He didn't want to reflect badly on Andrew after all...)

Instead he was sitting on the back of a park bench near Andrew's place pensively staring out into nowhere and smoking.

Andrew occasionally went out for a stroll, when he could pull himself away from his work. He'd noticed that Alec hadn't been showing up, but it hadn't exactly weighed heavily on his mind -- he figured he'd start coming in when he wanted to, and if he didn't, well, he'd be out a job.

That was when he ran into Alec, sitting on the bench. He looked him up and down thoughtfully. "Where have you been?"

Alec flicked a glance at Andrew and then looked away. He waved the hand with a cigarette in the air with vague gesturing. "Out... just... out."

Which is insanely obvious.

He also looks like he hasn't slept... and not in the 'I've been up all night going to parties' sort of not having slept.

"Out doing... what, exactly? Other than not coming to work, of course."

It's hard to tell exactly what his tone entails. Disappointment, perhaps, or at the very least, a tacit acknowledgement that Alec hasn't been doing as he's expected to.

There's a tiny hint of a flinch at that last bit. Someone feels a bit guilty on that score.

"Doing out like things...like... being out."

"That's not an acceptable excuse for not showing up. You've been punctual for weeks."

He doesn't exactly care if Alec doesn't show up -- it's his own problem, and it's his work that will be affected by it -- but he sure as hell wants some kind of explanation for it, if he's going to waste his time asking in the first place.

"Maybe I think it is," Alec snaps. "Unlike some people I've actually tried to have a social life outside of screwing their assistants."

Once he realizes what the hell he just said, which is about three seconds after he said it, he shuts up and looks rather horrified.

"Excuse me? I'd like to pretend that wasn't a reference to me, but I doubt that you'd have that level of vitriol in your voice for anyone else."

He stares at Alec coldly, eyebrow raised.

Alec mentally scrambles for a response to that one. He really needs to learn how to think before he speaks. It's doubtful he ever will, but he does need to learn it.

Honestly not wanting to talk about Andrew's sex life, as weird as it is, okay, maybe not weird, but still... Alec says instead,without looking at Andrew, "I got dumped last night by Kevin's Mom."

"By his mother? Mmm... did this Kevin want to dump you, or did his mother make the choice herself?"

He doesn't like it when people don't make their own decisions, or when they make someone else the scapegoat.

"I don't know! She wouldn't let me talk to him, or even let me in the door!" Alec waves his cigarette around in agitation and the sparks flare brighter than they should.

"She said I was making him sad by flirting with other people all the time and she didn't like it."

Alec does flirt, but it never really means anything.

"That's utterly ridiculous."

On many levels, and he was about to diagram just how many, in case Alec wasn't aware of it. "For one, flirtation is harmless, especially if you never do anything beyond flirting. One can hardly accuse you of cheating, if a coy word or glance is all you ever offer. Secondly, I assume the fellow has his own free will, and is capable of telling you himself if he no longer wants to date. Thirdly, hiding behind ones mother is cowardly at worst, and ridiculous at best."

"I was going to tell her that, but she shut the door on my face! She's always been a weirdly controlling bitch."

He hunches over a little and looks miserable, the line of Andrew's logical reasoning not being able to overcome the utter misery of having gotten dumped like that.

"I didn't do anything."

"Then you'll just have to talk to Kevin in person. I'm sure you can find a way to get ahold of him, even if it turns out to be a bit sneaky."

He shakes his head. He doesn't like to see Alec miserable, mostly because he knows that he's no good at solving this sort of thing. It just doesn't happen to him, and it's hard for him to relate -- his advice is generally overly logical, not emotional.

He rolls the advice over in his mind a bit.

"Yeah, but do I want to? I mean... he can't even stop his mom from controlling him like that," he says. "It'd be stupid going back... like I want to get kicked."

Alec is trying to convince himself that it shouldn't hurt.

"You'll be left wondering just what happened forever if you don't approach the topic with him head on. Better to be disappointed than left in the dark, isn't it?"

Relationships were not his strong suit. He only hoped his advice was somewhat relevant.

Alec is amazed that they're even having this conversation and Andrew hasn't told him to buck up or something like that, drop the guy and get back to work.

Maybe he does care...ish.

"His mom's a controlling bitch. I don't think she liked me... she doesn't like you at least. At least, she doesn't approve of you."

"Very few people like me," he said, not seeming to mind in the least. "And it doesn't matter if she doesn't like you, either. It's not her choice."

If only real life worked that way. Of course, Andrew made sure it did for himself.

And Andrew's a lot older than Alec and more experienced/practiced at these things.

"It makes everything uncomfortable and weird and... and..." his voice cracks. "And fuckitalltohell." Alec drops his head onto his knees taking deep breaths.

Damnit he's not going to cry. It's just a stupid boy. A stupid boy he's been seeing for three months and everything had been mostly okay.

Oh damn, Alec isn't going to cry, is he? If there's one thing Andrew hates, it's overt displays of emotion. He's not sure what he'll do with himself if Alec actually sheds tears -- right now, he looks close, but he's not doing so just yet. Good. Better to keep it that way.

"Then you should date someone else."

His answers were always just a little too cavalier.

He's trying not to cry. He knows that Andrew hates overt displays of emotion. However he's also just gotten his heart broken by the first steady guy he's had.

Fortunately, perhaps, Andrew's words rile Alec a little and there's a crackle of static in the air.

"Yeah, sure. Easy as pie. Just find someone else. It's just like picking a book out of the library, innit?"

"It isn't difficult, if you really put your mind to it. There are willing dates everywhere. You only have to be willing to look."

It's always been that easy for him, at least.

Sure, it's been easy for him. He's got power and money and things people want.

"Hah." His voice cracks again. "I do look and everyone, most the time's, horrid power grubbers looking for an easy way get something for nothing. And I don't really want those sort of dates."

"So. You want me to set you up with somebody? Because I could."

He really doesn't want Alec to cry. Really really wants to avoid it. In fact, he isn't even sure what to do with the cracking emotion in Alec's voice. At this point, he'll offer the kid something like setting him up on date just to spare any sort of emotional breakdown.

Alec looks up at him. "Set me up with some one? Like some... some... business deal or something?" He laughs shakily, a bit of hysteria now leaking into his voice.

"Would you pick someone out personally or have your assistant do it? I'm sure he'd love that one."

Idea not going down well...

"Don't be ridiculous," he snaps, having apparently officially reached the end of his rope when it came to comforting Alec. "It wouldn't be a business deal, as you so crassly put it. It would be me attempting to make your life slightly better by arranging for you to meet someone. But if you'd rather wallow in self-pity and self-doubt, well, by all means, be my guest."
