It wasn't exactly late when Alec came home from another party to say good-bye to another one of his friends shipping out. He'd actually left early because he felt left out - one of the few there with no uniform on or talking about when they'd get their uniform - everyone looking at him like he'd done something wrong. The only reason he went was because his friend asked him to come. There was an ulterior motive to it, though. A bunch of them tried to convince him to join up. They'd gotten him papers and everything to sign. (This time they even went as far as to fill out parts of it.)

He took them, and now threw them onto the table in kitchen as he ghosted through the apartment. Andrew wasn't home yet. He, Alec knew, was on one of his not dates. He snorted at the thought. He started for his room and then paused, looking down the hallway towards Andrew's office.

Hesitating over his door knob he stared at it and then the other doorway.

Making a decision, probably a horribly stupid one (but when did that stop him) he walked over to Andrew's office door. He tried the door.

And it was unlocked.

Huh. Andrew must have been in a hurry to leave.

Pushing it open he stepped into the office and flicked on the light. He knew the room pretty well. So... if there were pictures, where would they be?

Probably the desk. No one ever went behind the desk except Andrew.

So that's where Alec headed.

The pictures were, unfortunately, not in the desk. They were in the safe behind one of the few paintings in the room. However, Alec wouldn't be able to discover that for certain, not when the desk drawer was locked. Still, he might have a bit of time to peek around before Andrew came home.

Which he did, several minutes later, cigarette in hand and whatever woman he'd taken on a date conspicuously not there. It hadn't been a good date, not by his standards. So when he walked down the hall to his office, he was only thinking of one thing: have a drink, do some work, go to bed.

Until he noticed Alec standing behind his desk.

"Are you finding anything interesting?" Andrew asked, in that quiet and sarcastic tone that usually spelled trouble. He stepped a little further into the office, looked around, making sure nothing had been disturbed or put out of place.

"There's more rum in the pantry. You weren't in here for that."

Teenagers, he thinks, must live to attempt to convince their parents of things that are unlikely and improbable. Andrew rarely falls for it.

"I did. And you assert that you didn't?"
rianofski: (But it won't make it any easier to see)

[personal profile] rianofski 2012-09-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I don't. And I think we need to have a serious discussion."

So much for Alec avoiding the conversation.

"Then by all means, this is the best time to have them."

He sits down at his desk, sighing, gesturing for Alec to sit down, too.

He frowns and shuffles the papers from hand to hand. "Your friends are pressuring you to enlist?"
rianofski: (And all is undone)

[personal profile] rianofski 2012-09-06 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"They certainly don't. You know as well as I do that enlisting is a terrible idea. Let your friends who are so eager to get killed be the ones to ship out. The war can't last forever, and it would be far wiser for you to focus on your career here, somewhere safe."

"There is a draft, Alec. And I'm doing everything I can to keep you out of it."

Maybe he shouldn't have said that, but he's frustrated. He feels like Alec isn't listening, like he just wants to throw his life away.
rianofski: (And taste the air in your lungs)

[personal profile] rianofski 2012-09-06 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't owe them any explanation. All they need to know is that you haven't yet been drafted. Not everyone can be. If they're juvenile enough to fight you about that, I dread to think what they'll be doing when they're in the military."

Andrew goes silent for a moment, eyes narrowed, one fist clenched on the desk. It's hard to tell what he's angrier about -- the use of the word, or Alec's assertion that people think he has no idea what he's talking about.

"You're right, I never fought in a war. The reason I never fought in a war is because I was too busy fleeing from the communist party, because I was too busy witnessing my entire family get killed in front of me, because the only thing I was able to do was survive, and even that took more hard work than it should have. It would have been a luxury to fight in a war compared with the hell I went through at your age, Alec, and if your friends have anything to say about my past, they can say it to my face."

[personal profile] rianofski 2012-09-06 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"You understand from an impersonal point of view. You have no idea what it was like, no idea what any of us went through just to make it here. And look at America, look at how it's become less and less ideal. This isn't the country I thought it was, and I certainly won't allow any son of mine to fight in a war for it and its twisted beliefs."

He barely even registers that he referred to Alec as his son, so fired up is he about the war issue.

"Yes, what they're doing in Germany is dreadful. But it is not our job to stop it, and even if it were, you can't be naive enough to think the United States is going in because they have any interest in stopping Hitler. Where were we when Hitler invaded Poland? Where were we when he started the atrocities? We didn't enter this war until we were attacked. There's nothing noble here."

He looks disgusted, horrified by the very idea that Alec would want to get involved.
